5) Safer: An extension spring, when stretched, is in a very dangerous position. It stores a lot of energy, and in case the hooks and holders holding the spring break, it can cause serious damage. There have been incidences where the extension spring mechanism in garage doors have broken, causing the springs to fly off and damage the windows, car windows, windshields, etc. In the worst case, the flying springs can severely injure a person, even leading to death. Thus, it becomes essential to use some kind of protective countermeasure to ensure safety while using this mechanism. Comparatively, a torsion spring is retained in the shaft in case of a breakdown, making it completely safe to use.

1) Longer Working Life: When the garage door is opened or closed, an extension spring gets fully stretched. Thus, it is subjected to more shearing stress, which reduces its working life. In comparison, the torsion spring arrangement only coils and uncoils during the door's operation, which puts much less stress on it. Thus, it lasts longer. Typically, extension springs are limited to 10,000 cycles, while torsion springs keep on working reliably for up to 20,000 cycles.

2) Smoother Operation: Extension springs can vary in tension during the door's operation. For example, when opening the garage door, there may be a larger amount of tension initially which ebbs away towards the end. This causes a jerky motion while opening or closing the door. A torsion spring, on the other hand, offers a much more smoother range of motion to the door.

4) More Efficient: Due to the jerky behavior of the extension spring, the motorized garage opener may have to draw larger power to open the door. Conversely, the much more balanced behavior of torsion spring prevents the loading of the opener's motor, and thus saves on power, making it more energy efficient in comparison.

3) Easier Maintenance: The extension spring arrangement on a garage door requires more number of parts, including longer cables, pulley arrangement, hooks, and metal tracks. This increases maintenance requirements and also the chances of failure of the system. The torsion spring based mechanism requires significantly lesser number of parts, and thus, maintenance is easier with lesser chances of failure.

Thus, it is clear that torsion springs are a better choice for garage doors. They may be costlier, but are much safer and give a better pay-off in the long run. Only in rare cases, when factors such as limited head-room in the garage prevent the installation of torsion springs, should one go in for extension springs. In such cases, for safety reasons, one http://chapmangaragedoor.com/ must carry out regular maintenance of the mechanism.

Your remote car key isnt a key. It's billions of them.

It doesnt have just one secret code to your car. Thatd be too easy for someone to electronically intercept, copy and use.

Instead, your car key uses whats known as rolling code. Every time you press the button, a new, randomly generated code is sent over a radio frequency to your car, which has a synchronized code generator that recognizes it and then burns it so it can never be used again. The key and the car then create new codes for the next time around, and the process repeats.

In case the two ends get out of sync -- say your https://www.arizonagaragedoorandrepair.com/ kid grabs the keys when theyre out of range and presses the button a bunch of times -- the car can recognize a few hundred future codes. When it receives one of them, it disables all the prior ones.

Its a proven system thats secured tens of millions of cars and remote garage door openers for years. And now it may be useless.

White-hat hacker Samy Kamkar, who last week cracked GMs OnStar smartphone app security and demonstrated his ability to illicitly unlock and start a car over a cellular network, has developed a device made from $20 worth of parts that he calls the RollJam, which does exactly what its name implies.

Watch the latest video at video.foxbusiness.com

Kamkar tells FoxNews.com that when someone tries to use a remote key, the device copies the code and jams the signal so the car doesnt receive it. When the user clicks his remote again, the device sends through the original code as it captures the new one, giving the attacker a valid code to use as he pleases.

The RollJam is small, not much larger than the remotes it emulates, and can likely be further miniaturized. The only caveat is that it needs to be within range of the keys transmission to work, but that is often more than 50 feet. It needs to be programmed for the specific security system its attacking, but many brands use the same suppliers and Kamkar has tried it out successfully on several. He admits there may be newer verification protocols out there that it cant beat, but hes yet to encounter one, and that still leaves older car and garage doors vulnerable.

Kamkar will reveal more technical details on RollJam and his OnStar exploit at the Def Con 23 hacker conference in Las Vegas. The conference will also feature a Car Hacking Village, where you can find out all the other ways your car isnt secure.

Outdoor sheds are best spaces for storage and parking vehicles. Most of the homes or even garages have such structures built up to place various useful or scrap objects. While they are designed to accommodate various objects and for parking vehicles as well, they must have doors for safety purposes. While you consider choosing such sheds, keeping them open might restrict the usage of such spaces.

Well, you might be aware of the various options of doors available for the same. But, if you want the best alternative, roll up doors are a thing to opt for. These are the most popular pick for such storage sheds and garages, as well. They are not only easy to install, but also easy to open and close. These have many benefits over the regular ones that swing open inwards or outwards.

These are available in two types. The first type of roll up door consists of sectional doors, with a number of horizontal panels that are fixed to each other with hinges. The next type is rolling steel door that does not consist of separate panels. Aluminum is the most commonly used material for making them. Apart from this, other materials like steel and fiberglass are also used. Wood is also occasionally used in their manufacturing; it is considered if wood is primarily used for shed building. However, using this material includes a lot of processing for making it weather proof, etc.

These are often used to seal larger openings, but can also be fixed to cover smaller openings, as well. They consist of thin metal slats that stay connected, forming a door that can be pulled down or raised up as required. While you raise it up to enter the shed, it will roll up around its top horizontal structure. These are also the most preferred alternative, considering the security they offer. They are safer than the regular ones, which makes them a popular pick for commercial warehouses, small and large shops, and carports, as well.

You can decide the type and material while you work on the storage shed plan. Remember that adding such garage or shed doors while building the storage area is much easier and less expensive. Cost of installing these depends upon the material used, the type of door, and mainly, its dimensions.

Remember that these doors do not take up extra floor space while opening and closing. However, you will need to have some space dedicated for fixing the structure of the same over the door frame, where the door roll ups and rests, after you open it for entering the storage shed. These are the best selection while you plan to fit your outdoor shed in a smaller space. Moreover, you can be assured of having a perfect enclosure for such href="http://www.garagedoorservice.com/">http://www.garagedoorservice.com/ a storage structure with such doors. You can also consider the electric door opener systems. Thus, check the alternatives, get quotations from various contractors offering such installation services, and then, get the right door for this purpose.
Since she was a puppy, Lexus lived with her family in Franklin County, Kentucky. On Friday, the ten-year-old sweet dog was surrendered to the Franklin County Humane Society. "Unfortunately, her owner recently remodeled his home and no longer wanted a dog in the house. She is very laid back and sweet and would love to find a new home for the holidays," stated the organization's Facebook page as the reason Lexus was surrendered.

Fortunately the Humane Society is an open admissions facility and there is a 95% save rate, so the chances of Lexus finding someone to love her and care for her are better than most shelters. Sadly, Lexus doesn't understand; the worried look on her face and her posture show her confusion and sadness. Might she be wondering what she did wrong to wind up in a cement kennel far away from where she used to live? Where is her family? And how many people want to adopt a senior dog?

A Facebook page for Lexus can be found by clicking here. An acquaintance who knows Lexus has noted the dog has lived with other dogs and is used to being with children. As the dog has grown older, however and her eyesight may be failing, it is advised anyone interested in adopting Lexus come to the shelter and do a "meet and greet." Perhaps even more devastating to a dog is being surrendered again - so make sure the entire family http://ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/ is on board with a new four-legged companion is very important.

As angry and disappointed most animal advocates are to read still another incomprehensible reason an owner surrendered a dog who has been part of the family for a decade, or those who have stated, "she's just a dog," the focus is to concentrate on helping Lexus find a new home. Please share her plight with rescue organizations, family, friends and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives, and miracles happen everyday. Help to make life better for Lexus, and help to find her a wonderful http://bit.ly/1oHl9iu home where she will never have to worry about waking up in a concrete kennel at a shelter ever again.

If you are interested in adopting Lexus, please call the shelter at 502 875-7297 or stop by 12:00-5:00 on Saturday or 12:00-4:00 on Sunday.

Car garages are modern equivalents of the horse stables of old! However, the comparison ends there. Unlike the stables, the garages are completely automated nowadays, with garage door openers and modern security devices. The things that make the opening and shutting of garage doors possible are the indispensable springs. Every part of a machine has a limited service life however, and there comes a time when these springs need to be replaced at the earliest.

About Garage Door Springs

Springs are the components that make lifting of garage door possible by using the 'Spring torsion principle'. They come in pairs and are placed at the top of the garage door on both sides.

These springs come in two main types. One type is called 'Torsion spring' and other is called an 'Extension Spring'. Torsion springs are the most commonly used ones. The service life of a torsion spring is often quoted to be around 10,000 cycles. That gives you a total service life of six to seven years.

Every time a door is opened or closed, the hardened steel mechanism of the spring is stretched and there comes a time when eventually it gives over to the stress and fatigues out. When even one of the pair of springs is broken, it is standard practice to replace both the springs at a time. That is because, eventually the other one break down and gives in any way.

The other kind, the extension springs; lifts doors through stretching action. Their life is also generally limited to six years. Both springs types cost about $30 to $40, if you go for brand new ones. Inquire online, about the costs of these springs, according to the type and model that you have used in http://www.overheaddoorgroup.com/garage-door-repair/ your door. That should give you an idea about the material cost, which would be a part of total garage door replacement cost or bill that is handed to you.

%20Nashville%20TN.jpg" width="358" />

Replacement Price

There are two main factors that determine the cost of garage door replacement. One is the material cost and other is labor cost. The replacement job involves a considerable amount of work and can be dangerous due to the intense tension that is exerted on the springs. That's why, it's better to let a professional handle it.

The whole replacement procedure begins with closing the door and disconnecting the garage door opener. Next the torsion springs need to be unwound carefully using rods and then removed safely by disconnecting. Then the whole torsion apparatus needs to be removed and new springs must be put in. The whole procedure can take an hour or two.

Normally, the total spring replacement cost is around $150 to $200. This includes the cost of spring pair ($30 to $45), transport fee and service fee. Anything charged above this should be questioned. Many times, these handymen recommend unnecessary replacement of other components that hikes the price. Make sure that only what is required http://bit.ly/1oHl9iu is done.

One needs to understand when a price being offered by a handyman or a professional is beyond reasonable. You do want to let the man earn sufficiently but I am sure that you don't like getting ripped off.

How To Get The Most From Your Stud Finder

Bob Schmidt shows you how to properly use a stud finder in your home remodeling projects.

Hi, I am Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. So you have been thinking about going out and buying a stud finder. Just like any other tool, there is an effective way to use it. I will show you how. Lets get to work. There are a lot of different stud finders available on the market today. Here is a $70.00 model, it comes with a DVD, it sense studs and hot electric and metal studs and metal pipes and stuff. I dont really have much use for that one for what I do. Here is a $30.00 model, it has a deep scanner on it, and a stud finder setting also. Again may be the deep scan works better on plaster. Most jobs I'm on are dry wall, so I really dont have much use for that one. And this is a $10.00 model, it is pretty basic. It works well through dry wall, it will find the stud that I want for what I want, and thats the probably the model I would pick. I actually have two stud finders that I use pretty much on a daily basis. Here is my less expensive model and the second one I have is a little bit more expensive, but it has a second feature and that it has a laser on it. So not only does it find studs, but it also will shoot me a level line across for finding studs with my less expensive stud finder. The reason this is one of the stud finders that I selected was: A. it has a padded case. Anything with a case is going to protect my tools, I have much rather appreciate. B. it was not horribly expensive. But the thing I like the best about this was is it is not only as this is a stud finder where they actually find a stud, but you can also take this handy dandy little dude here, stick it in the middle and with a flick of a button, it gives a level line, which is great when you want to find studs along the line to either put a trim hold on or may be mark the bottom of cabinets. Along with a stud finder you really need to have a finished nail and a hammer. I dont just trust the stud finder specifically to tell me the studs. The stud finder will sense a lot of other things in the wall. They will sense pipes and heat docks, and things that I really dont want nails or screws into for trims or cabinets. I always take my finish now when I find the surface to put it on, and I will tap the end on my finish nail with my hammer to get rid of that sharp point because I dont want to accidentally puncture a wire or pipe. Now suspecting that there is a stud on either side of this box and noticing that there is a defect in one of the field nail holes down here. I am suspecting that there is a stud on the left side of this box. You always hold your stud finder off of where you think the stud is. Press the button until the light, and the sensor, and sound goes off. You keep it pressed firmly against the wall until it goes over, until you start to watch the red light go up and assuring off, there is the stud right where I suspected. You want to find both edges of the studs so that you can aim your screw for just a metal because believe it or not electricians staple their wires right along side of their studs. So dont want to gray the screw hanging a cabinet off and hit some electrical wires. So, once you get your two rough marks on the wall, as to where you think the beginning and the end of the stud are, always start somewhere in the center. And you can feel it, it is soft that you dont want to drive it in real deep, you just want to get it in enough that you are sure and then just keep walking it over until you find the edge of the stud. Right there it is, there is the edge of the stud. Now, you know that a stud is typically an inch and a half wide and that is pretty much way of mark. So what I would do is I would mark of an inch back from this side of the stud and that would be the center mark for where I am either going to nail, trim up or screw a cabinet screw. Typically studs are 16-inches apart in the wall. Your tape is usually marked with a red mark that signifies this stud parts. Once you find your first stud, pull your tape out long and double, and make sure that you have these studs at 16-inch centers. Now, no self respecting plumber would ever put a plumbing pipe this close to the surface of the dry wall and this is tight against the stud. They will keep it tight against the stud but generally they are supposedly to be half way back into the wall, so that when you are coming and trying to find that you dont get that stud, but it is not always like that. So youve got to be careful. Again, if you a marked that is a little bit wider than a normal stud, you always start in the center and work your way left or right. Now there are some places in your house where you can get some clues that there are going to be plumbing pipes. If the wall just on the other side of where you are looking for stud happens to be a bathroom, thats a show of red flags, be very cautious from plumbing pipes and drain pipes. If you have any strange marking at a particularly wide, really send your nail and gently, and listen for the sound of any metal. If you are looking for studs and you come out with two marks that are very close together, be very cautious of that, because that could mean a pipe, a sharp point of a PVC pipe. Bottom line is when you run your nail on the test, you will hear a bouncing sound. There is nothing in this wall that you want to nail that can move. Wires move, heat docks move, it will make different sounds, a PVC pipe that is why I blunted the end of this, I did not put a, I dont want to put a hole in a wire or in a heat dock or anything like that. So if you find something like that, clearly mark it as don not nail. Now, if you come up with a particularly large section that saying as all stud in all likelihood you have a heat dock. Either you want to start on the left side and see what you have, or you want to start on the right side and see what you have. If you hear a tiny sound, pretty much you have figured go to the other side. Usually they are right adjacent to a stud and then go to the other side and start from this side and go back. Here we have http://ow.ly/10qsQH a copper water line. Now, as you can see as I come up to the copper water line it senses it before I even get to it and it will continue to sense it until after I am passed it, which gives you the impression that there is a stud there an inch and a half thick. And this is a piece of heat dock. The stud finder also finds the heat dock, although if you run a nail into heat dock its not going to flood your house or start an electrical fire, but its definitely not going to hold up whatever you want the nail in there for. So there you go, the stud finder. A very effective tool, put a little common sense and make a little effort, and its very handy to have around and if your wife looking to buy one of this for a husband, I can pretty much guarantee he is in a go (sound), see there it works. Thanks a lot for watching, if you are interested of any of our videos please go back to our home channel and check out what we have there, and remember to subscribe, thanks.
